Freelance work
I have taken on a lot of freelance clients over the years, under the belief that lower budgets shouldn’t have to mean poor design. If a client can’t afford the design agency where I work day-to-day, maybe they can afford to hire me over a weekend, or for a few evenings, instead. They have to work with me during unsociable hours, but they get a good job done on a lower budget.
I’ve had some interesting clients, beyond the usual parade of local bands and nightclubs. The Gorbals Arts Project fund public art in one of Glasgow’s most notoriously rough areas. Chapter is an visual arts centre of world-class status all the way over in Cardiff. I edit as well as design a bi-monthly magazine for The Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club (which pays just enough to keep my car on the road), and I’ve recently completed a corporate identity for a prestigious independent consultancy firm who specialise in board-level interventions with multinational financial institutions.
